Press Conference of Barry Smith

Today in the Press Centre of Yubileyny SC the press conference of the Head Coach of SKA Barry Smith dedicated to the results of the team in 2009-2010 Season has been held. The Head Coach made an address to the Media:

- I would like to thank the Media – you were excellent to work with for the last three seasons and we have built a great relationship. I would like to thank the staff and the team personnel: doctors, masseurs and everyone who works for the organization. Those are tremendous people that were great to work with for all the three seasons. We have grown a lot over those three seasons.

I would like to say my special words of thanks to our fans. Saint-Petersburg public is the best in the KHL and every season there were more and more people coming to SKA games. They were of enormous support to the team.

We’ve had 10 great months and 5 terrible days. Those were the 5 playoff days. First playoff games are always the hardest. It sometimes happens at this stage that a regular championship outsider can get completely transformed. Whereas we had a breakdown in Game 1 and could not recover from that injury. Had it been a best of seven series we would still be able to save it but the reality is such that we no longer have any chances left and our season is over. Tomorrow I will go to Moscow and offer my resignation to the Board of Directors of the Club.

I am fully accountable for the results of the team.

Exclusive photo report from Ledovy Ice Palace

Head Coaches of both teams on the game:
Julius Supler, Head Coach of Dinamo Riga:

We have won against a very strong team. Again luck was on our side thanks to our tactics, discipline and great will to win, the last element being decisive. It was a very difficult game and the result was unexpected for us.

Barry Smith, Head Coach of SKA:
We started the game as we planned and scored but after the goal against our game went the wrong way. We started the second period well but after one mistake we had to kill a penalty. For that mistake we paid by two goals against in one minute. For the rest of the game we created scoring chances but the puck wouldn’t fly in for us. We lost two games and it is a challenge for us – now is the time to show character and prove ourselves. I believe in my players and I believe we will accomplish the difficult task.

When down 1:3 and having repeatedly failed to score why didn’t you start playing three lines?
Barry Smith: We needed energy and I wanted to save it. If I started playing three lines the players would be too exhausted to play hard. Besides our fourth line played good hockey with good speed and added th energy the team lacked.

Tonight there were more penalties than in the previous game, why did it happen?
Barry Smith: Tonight we played more aggressively both offensively and defensively and that led to more penalties.

Julius Supler: Two back to back games are difficult to play and emotions set in. one makes more mistakes and hence more penalties. We reacted in kind to physicality and pressing and that was the reason for more penalties.

What can you say about the way Masalskis played?
Julius Supler: I am very happy with the way he played and he made important saves both tonight and last night. He is one of those players that miss out a couple of seasons and then come back on ice and play great. Having recovered from an injury he played fighting pain. You see the way he plays. He proved that signing him this season was not a mistake. Today he is a hero.

How do the players who managed to score as little as 1 goal in two home games explain what has happened?
Barry Smith: Tonight they tried to support each other and in the room I brought them an example: once when I worked in Detroit in playoff series in Vancouver we were losing 0:3 but the guys pulled themselves together and after that we haven’t lost a single game even though everybody was sure of a complete defeat. One great thing about sports is that every game is a totally new story where previous victories and losses do not count.

Photo report from the game

Head Coaches of both teams on the game:
Julius Supler, Head Coach of Dinamo Riga:
- I am very happy that our team found the way to win against obvious favourite of the Championship. I am thankful to my players – they worked hard tonight executing the game plan and playing smart. This was a very valuable win for us.

Barry Smith, Head Coach of SKA:
- Dinamo Riga played very smart tonight and they earned their victory. Our team got nervous in the first period and it had an impact on the rest of the game: we had problems with passes accuracy and we did not do well offensively. Besides we had very little powerplay which made it difficult for us. All of that resulted in Riga scoring first which is very important in playoff games. We will do everything to play different kind of hockey tomorrow with confidence and tie the series.

The first line appeared to have had less ice time than usual – was it really so or we were mistaken?
Barry Smith: You saw it that way probably because we had very little powerplay when we normally have our first line on ice. Besides they were getting very few good passes from defense therefore their performance was not as spectacular as it usually is.

You said the team was nervous but do such experienced players ever allow themselves to be nervous?
Barry Smith: Even experienced players can get nervous because of so much importance given to the games. This is normal. I can tell you we will be doing our best for those who believe in us.

How much of an advantage has it been that many Dinamo players have been to Vancouver and still retain their game shape?
Julius Supler: I was concerned that they could have come back exhausted and not in good shape. Yes, there indeed was a disaster game against Russia at the Olympics but in all the other games our players did well. I think it gave them some confidence.

Your goalie did extremely well tonight, are you going to change him for future games or will you still play him?
Julius Supler: this is a complex tactical decision and I am not ready to give you the answer.

What can you say about the way Esche played? Can he be blamed for the goal against?

Barry Smith: No, Esche did very well and made some very important saves in the first period besides the goal was scored off Peretyagin’s stick. I can see none of the goalie’s fault in that.

Can we say that by the last game you’ve lost 1:8 you have deprived SKA of any vigilance?
Julius Supler: I don’t think that is the case. We approached this game very seriously and analyzed our opponent and practiced certain aspects of our game with Saint-Petersburg in mind. At the same time we played 6 games in a row and had no time to lift our heads off the ice. I am very thankful to my team for playing so disciplined and avoiding penalties because powerplay is the main strength for SKA. We kept telling the guys that with the right motivation anything is possible in sports and any opponent can be beaten. We proved it tonight.

Do you agree that it was the goalie who made the difference tonight? It seemed tonight that he wasn’t troubled much since all the offence was blocked by defensemen.
Julius Supler: One can always say that 60 per cent of any team’s success belongs to the goaltender, but I will say it again: our defense was of much help for us tonight, they defended actively, competently and smartly and in this case the whole team was behind tonight’s win.

Photo Report from Yubileyny SC

Head Coaches of both teams on the game:

Marek Sikora, Head Coach of Avtomobilist:

- We are impressed by tonight’s game and very happy to have won. In the first period SKA had very many chances and Ivan Lisutin helped us a lot. Our making the playoffs depended on the game result so the guys showed real heroism: they fought to the end and went down to block shots.

Barry Smith, Head Coach of SKA:

- Congratulations to Marek’s team on the victory! I was very happy that we’ve met and I wish him good luck in playoffs. Tonight’s game has shown once again that in our league any team can beat any team. Avtomobilist played very well; they went down to block shots which reminded us of our mistakes. Fortunately we have no injuries and all our players are in good shape.

Question to Marek Sikora: How did you prepare your team for the game?

- My game plan provided for active pressing even from our defense. It didn’t go very well in the first period since we are new to this league and it wasn’t easy to execute our game plan at such a level of play. Once again, our goalie made the difference for us in this game.

Question to Marek Sikora: If someone told you in the beginning of the season that you would make the playoffs, would you believed him?

- No, I wouldn’t. Especially that in the beginning we have lost many points. We were far behind and had problems with lineup but after a few wins at home we believed in ourselves. I thought tonight everything would be over as Sibir would beat Vityaz and we wouldn’t make the playoffs.

Question to Barry Smith: Are you happy to play Dinamo Riga?

- I can tell you that Dinamo Riga play very good hockey and even today they had a three-goal lead. They are a very strong team and playing them will be a real test.

Question to Marek Sikora: What state is you team in and how do you evaluate you chances in playoffs?

- Tonight we went down to block shots beautifully but doing that one runs great risk of being injured. Otherwise everything is OK and our chances depending on luck are from 30 to 70 per cent.

Question to Marek Sikora: Going into the third period, did you know the score of Sibir – Vityaz game?

- No, I didn’t.

Question to Barry Smith: Have you already made up your mind about the lines for playoffs?

- Not yet. We will watch the video of the game, work through the lines and make a decision. All our players except Kryukov and Kasparaitis are ready to play.

- Kirill stretched a ligament so we decided to spare him and sent him away. Tonight you could have noticed that Misko played defense – it was a kind of test to see if he can take a defenseman’s spot in case of emergency.
